WHO IS AFFECTED ?
People of colour hear the name 'banana' and more than often the actions of throwing bananas in anger or hate related instances has been documented.
WHAT IS AT STAKE HERE ?
Common decency. We live in a diverse world now. People and their cultures are interlinked.
WHY IS IT NOW THE TIME TO ACT ?
Because the word 'banana' when used in a racial action should be deemed unappropriate when used in context be placed in the grouping of racist words within the Act of Hate Crime.
HATE CRIME
The word 'banana' would then be an offensive word under the Hate Crime (Crime and Disorder Act 1998 and section 66 of the Sentencing Act 2020)
