A memorial bench has been installed to honour Reading Football Club's first black player.

News in from Galya Dimitrova of the BBC who has said that A memorial bench has been installed to honour Reading Football Club's first black player.


Andy Alleyne played full-back as a team member of the Reading Football Club in 1972. Andy unfortunately died of cancer aged 61 in 2012.

During Andy's Royals debut in 1972 he heard the racist abuse from the stands. At the time of Andy's reign in football he received the title of being the 'only black footballer in Reading'. Andy Alleyne played 53 times for Reading before continuing his football journey with other local clubs



And this is why the Holybrook Parish Council commissioned the tribute, which has now been placed in Linear Park behind Alleyne's home. An informal unveiling is being held on Sunday.
